All travel on Nenmar is done on foot. There is no motorized industry or locomotion, and no beasts of burden. Things are carried by strapping or draping them on one's body.
Wagons are used in limited ways for purposes such as transporting harvested sliffut from the field, rocks from the quarry, or the body of a person who had died to its final resting place. Even in these instances the wagon is pushed and/or pulled by people.
However, a rite-of-passage for Nenmaran youth is to travel around the world, visiting other regions, cities, and villages—all on foot. They do this by joining one of the numerous traveling merchant groups, any number of which are at any point throughout the inhabited regions of Nenmar (see Society section).
The roads are basically foot paths, although the more heavily traveled highways between major cities are wide enough to accommodate several persons abreast in most places. All paths and pedestrian roads are located a safe distance from the forests—this is primarily to provide a buffer from the carnivorous pellims that inhabit the fimmen forests. A lone traveler or a pair of people would be vulnerable to pellim attack, but most major roads on Nenmar are as full of people traveling as are highways on Earth with motorized vehicles.
Once inside a city or village, the streets are paved with smooth clay tiles that provide a comfortable and secure walking surface. The tiles have an excellent non-slip property, well suited for a firm footing even when covered with sheets of water during the daily rains.
